Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has led to a dramatic shift in American public opinion: 70% of Americans now consider Russia an enemy of the United States, up from 41% in January. And on this topic, Democrats and Republicans largely agree, with 72% of Democrats and 69% of Republicans describing Russia as an enemy.
A new Pew Research Center survey, conducted March 21-27, finds that just 7% of U.S. adults have an overall favorable opinion of Russia. Only 6% express confidence in its leader, President Vladimir Putin. In contrast, 72% have confidence in Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

President Vladimir Putin has announced a series of plans to increase the number of children being born in Russia from an average birth rate of under 1.5 per woman to 1.7 within four years.
Last year he promised tax breaks for bigger families.
On Wednesday he told parliament “the birth rate is falling again” before pledging state funding for new mothers.
“Maternity capital” has until now only been paid to families with at least two children.
Welfare benefits will also be paid for children aged three to seven in low-income families, and free school meals will be provided for the first four years of school.

Putin issuing a dictate about birth rates isn’t going to fix Russia’s demographic collapse.
What would seriously help is to do things that would make Russian women look forward to raising children in Russia.
But the reality of Russia is that far too many people still live in Soviet-era housing because the economy is being raped and pillaged by Putin and his oligarch buddies so they can enjoy lavish palaces and superyachts.
The Russian people are envious of the prosperity in Ukraine as is underlined by the hideous amount of looting that the Russian troops are doing in Ukraine. They’re stealing all manner of simple consumer goods that are beyond the reach of normal Russian families.
Ukraine is hardly perfect but due to their efforts to join the EU they’ve instituted economic and systemic reforms that have resulted in the rise of natural prosperity. Common people in Ukraine can work hard and then keep what they earn or create.
In Russia if you do enough to attract the attention of some oligarch then you can count on that prick stealing everything from you. Thus the Soviet system is effectively still in play and the net result is no one wants to do more than they need to do to survive. Why bother if you know that anything extra will be stolen from you by an oligarch or by Tsar Pidor Putin himself?
To a lesser extent the same dynamic explains the exodus of wealth from California and the influx of wealth into Texas and Florida.
