American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten said on a recent podcast that GOP-backed parental rights legislation could have alarming results and even suggested that such laws are how "wars start."
During an appearance on a podcast with radio host Rick Smith earlier this month, Weingarten criticized parental rights bills like the one recently signed into law in Florida.
"This notion – we've been very lucky in America, and we in some ways live in a bubble for a long time," she said. "This is propaganda. This is misinformation. This is the way in which wars start. This is the way in which hatred starts."
The AFT president also dismissed the suggestion that teachers are engaging in efforts to make students think in a certain way or are exposing children to inappropriate content.
"We're not indoctrinating," she said. “We're not grooming. … What we're doing is making sure we educate kids. We keep them safe. We keep them welcome. And we teach them how to think, not what to think."
Weingarten and the AFT have been vocal critics of Florida Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis and his state's push for parental rights legislation regarding instruction on critical race theory, and sex and gender.
Last year, DeSantis signed legislation into law banning CRT in Florida's schools. The Stop the Wrongs to Our Kids and Employees Act, otherwise known as the W.O.K.E. Act, equips Floridians with the tools they need to combat "woke indoctrination."
And Florida's Parental Rights in Education bill, signed into law last month, prohibits instruction on sexual orientation and gender identity in grades kindergarten through third grade and limits age-inappropriate discussions of sexuality in other grades.
Dubbed by critics as the "Don't say gay" bill despite there being no mention of a ban on the word, H.B. 1557 also allows parents to access their children's education and health records and requires schools to notify parents of changes to their child's mental, physical or emotional well-being. The bill exempts schools from disclosing information to their parents if a "reasonably prudent person" would be concerned that doing so could result in abuse, abandonment or neglect.
Similar legislation has been introduced in other states, including Alabama, Louisiana, Tennessee and Ohio.
Weingarten claimed on the podcast that "right-wing extremists" were "trying to put back in the closet people who may be gay or trans."
The issue of parental rights has become a hot-button topic since the start of the COVID pandemic. School board meetings across the country have included parents protesting school mask mandates, critical race theory instruction and transgender policies.
“That's a man, baby!”
Riddle me this Batman, do all these ultra leftwing judges and professors and journalists and think tank people all come from the same neighborhood in NYC? Every one of them has the exact same biography. What the heck was NYC putting in the water? Fluoride?
“We’re not indoctrinating,” she said. “We’re not grooming. … What we’re doing is making sure we educate kids. We keep them safe. We keep them welcome. And we teach them how to think, not what to think.”>>>> Everything she, it, he said here is a lie.
as a manager a new hire (not mine) was assigned to me to get to know my system. He wanted a sit down with me to go over the system. Me, having a $8B per year payment system, which produced about 5 pallets of paper SOR’s and EOB’s a day, figured he could review our procedure manual, get familiar with our system and then i could sit down and answer any question he had. He quit. My guess was, he couldn’t read.
How many decades has this woman been leading the AFT? What’s up with that?
David Brenner didn’t die he became a union wacko.
War? War? No War! You self proclaimed gate keepers of our children are wanting to groom, inflict mental issues, secret medical intervention…. Your right but it won’t be war it will be a few examples of how easy it is to have these crazies get what’s coming. These people are way more unhinged than I thought. Glad my kids are grown, conservatives and productive citizens. I can’t say anything nice about AFT personnel.
Bullfauci.
That’s exactly what they’re doing. They want to groom children and they’re foaming at the mouth rabid when someone tries to stop them. It shows you how mentally ill and dangerous they really are.
Yes, war is needed. It’s the best way to exterminate the leftist filth destroying the country.
Nice try. Weingarten and his creepy members started the war many years ago.
Yes, we’re at war.

Talk about deluded. Horrible “leader.” But she thinks she is being perfectly logical. 🙄
She lies. It's as simple as that - and as malevolent. There's a special place in hell for people like her.
What an absolute lie.
I'm an old guy, and despite having gone to a Military Academy for High School and Junior college, and multiple degrees in engineering. science and business administration from decades ago, even then, Out of hundreds of teachers, I had maybe 10 that taught me how to think, not what to think.
I can't imagine, that, given the state of the educational system these days, one would be lucky to encounter 2 or 3 teachers / professors in 20 -25 years of education who tried to teach their students how to think, rather than what to think.
Dang! Spot on! YES, "it" really looks like David Brenner, LOL. I knew the face was familiar. RIP David, he was a class act. He'd have a chuckle if he were here.
Yes, it's interesting to see how they are attempting to escalate the conflict.
This is just one small step away from the teachers' unions claiming that, by demanding that our young children not be indoctrinated in the new "Woke" religion, we are unleashing a Holocaust.

False Dilemma Fallacy!
It's possible to have both*.

*Don't get me wrong: I'm not seriously advocating a direct confrontation with Russia. Rather, we should simply continue supplying and arming our Ukrainian friends; they are doing a fine job, decimating Russian war-making capabilities (though at a horrendous cost).
This ping list is for the other articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)
The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.

She’s right, they have been living in a bubble.
And she’s lying through her teeth about the rest.
Ah! So have a homeschooling list. Thank you for your work and efforts.
