I admit I saw this elsewhere but I thought it might be a good thing to put here because honestly I look and listen to songs people post. I am always entertained and it opens my mind to many different avenues of musical tastes I have not known before. I hope ones like this column.
good one
I also thought of “Disintegration” from them
Omg, didn’t see this and I just put it up. Yes. Great song.
Yes. Partly why i love it. I love history.
Whenever I hear “Fast Car” it makes me cry.
The Dead really put out ballads.
‘Jack Straw’ is a good one.
Thanks for jogging my memory. A bit of research reveals that _Time for the Stars_ is Heinlein story I was thinking of.
Cold Missouri Waters
This song is about of the devastation of the Mann Gulch fire of 1949 in the state of Montana.
On the afternoon of August 5, the first day of the fire, 15 smokejumpers parachuted into the area, to fight the fire, rendezvousing with a former smokejumper who was employed as a fire guard at the nearby campground. As the team approached the fire to begin fighting it, unexpected high winds caused the fire to suddenly expand, cutting off the men’s route and forcing them back uphill. During the next few minutes, a “blow-up” of the fire covered 3,000 acres in 10 minutes, claiming the lives of 13 firefighters, including 12 of the smokejumpers. The fire would continue for five more days before being controlled.
The song tells this true story of the smokejumpers’ experience through the point of view of Dodge, one of the only 3 remaining survivors.
Ode to Billie Joe.
Lots of good options here. Thank you.
And then he walked up to me and asked me if I wanted to dance.

“Livin on sponge cake”
‘Nothin to show but brand new tattoo…How it got here I haven’t a clue”
Has “Margaritaville” been mentioned?
It’s nobody’s fault
Well it could be my fault
It’s my own damned fault
Ah! I’m sure it’s been mentioned but Charlie Daniels’ “The Devil Went Down to Georgia” is one I can’t let go by if it hasn’t!
“House Rent Blues (One Bourbon...)” definitely belongs as a top pick!
That is really interesting - thanks for all that work. Did you have that written down before or just in your head? Did you add anything to it just now?
Jim Morrison was pretty bright - he just may have been writing a poem/song in allegory about Vietnam.
Or - he was high when he wrote the song, and you were when trying to figure out its meaning! (Just kidding).
It really is an interesting way of looking at it.
I just hope that you haven’t ruined the song for me now! I have a piece of art in the house that I LOVED when we first bought it. I made the mistake of reading about it more and various reviews of it (trying to see how much it might be worth now). One of the reviews made it so I never look at it the same way that I first did - and sort of ruins it for me now. :(
“Battle Of New Orleans”

I never realized how threatening the singer sounds. No pleading to Jolene here!
GOOD one!
