Frank Kerrigan received the call no parent wants to receive. His son Frankie had died.
Frankie, who was 57 at the time, suffers from mental illness and was living on the streets, his family said.
Frank Kerrigan was notified by the Orange County Coroner’s Office that a body discovered in Fountain Valley had been positively identified as Frankie through the use of fingerprints.
Devastated by their loss, the Kerrigan family held a funeral and Frankie was buried in a plot next to his mother.
The only problem? It wasn’t Frankie.
Just days after the funeral, Frankie showed up at the home of family friends who had just served as pallbearers at his own funeral.
The family had actually buried another man who has since been identified as John Dickens.

*** The loving family allowed their precious 57 year-old son with mental illness to live on the streets so long that they could not properly identify the remains... ***
I have a friend who has a homeless brother in law (adult). He is paranoid, maybe schizophrenic. He refuses to take his medications. They’ve tried everything. He cannot be held against his wishes for more than a couple of days. They have given him a cell phone so that they can contact him, but he thinks he’s being listened to and spied on. He doesn’t trust a single soul. He is probably in his mid 50s or even older. The rest of the family does what they can to provide for him when they do occasionally hear from him. They would love for him to come stay with them, but he won’t. He prefers the independence on the street. Sometimes he goes to jail for misdemeanors like sleeping on a park bench. He enjoys the meals and the bed for a few days, and then he’s back on the streets. Let me know if you have an idea that would work on this guy. I’m telling you, they’ve tried everything.
Pedantic, I know; but even though "lead" (the metal) and "led" are homonyms, they have vastly different meanings. Headline writing these days!
Switched at death.
Or, “Who the Dickens is that?”
Using lead (metal) for ‘led’ (not metal) can lead ( not metal) to trouble.
Funeral costs only. be grateful it was a mistake.
Trouble indead. You led and I fallowed.
It seems blood ties may be present so this is an avenue to pursue, although jurisdictions may vary.
There is always prayer.
I get your point, but you’re missing mine.
Generally speaking, public servants are immune from punishment due to negligence unless it rises to a criminal level.
We’ve all read the stories posted here, and the citations of the double standards.
But it’s not just public servants: My cousin was recently the victim of a violent attack with baseball bat. She was lucky to survive. She was admitted to a hospital for xrays and observation, thereupon discharged the following morning.
Turns out she was sent home with multiple broken bones which were NOT identified by ER doctors.
But other than my cousin eventually getting a ‘go-away’ check, I would bet money that no punishment is levied
