I figured it was a crime of passion..stabbing someone 60 times shows tremendous hate and rage towards that person

That, or a particular kind of psychopath that loves using knives.
It also depends where they stab them.
If lots in the face, thats usually someone who knows them in a relationship way
Honestly, now I’m almost relieved when I find out a crime is just a “normal” crime of passion. It almost seems kind of old-fashioned and understandable.
It’s pretty sad that we’ve gotten to the point where we feel relieved that somebody was killed by someone with a grudge whom they knew instead of by a homeless psychotic.
I still remember the highly inappropriate folk song they taught us in public school in NYC - Frankie and Johnnie. Very graphic, but the age old story of jealousy and revenge by a spurned lover.
