I thought some might be interested in this event. Camp Aliceville was one of the largest German POW camps in the country. They arrived by train, and my father was a teenager at that time. He remembers seeing them walk from the train station to the camp.

In addition, although small, Aliceville Museum has a great collection of POW memorabilia and other historical relics.

When I was stationed in Germany some of my buddies and I went skiing at Ochsenkopf near Bayreuth. An elderly German man came up to us and asked if we were Americans. He then asked us what states we were from. He had been a POW in Iowa after surrendering in Africa. He told us he was sent to live with a family on their farm and he worked for them and only had to check in once a week at the police station.

Sounds fun! We’re in HSV since 2019. I’ll tell my family about it. My mother’s father was a WWII POW in Germany. There were German POWs at Ft Knox where we are from too. My wife is now a crazy Tide fan but she has not yet been to Tuscaloosa

so maybe?
