Those were the days!

Yep there was inflation, energy shortage, high gas prices and lines.

Seems like today, oh wait a minute, the media got Nixon resigning over a misdemeanor, while cognitive clueless Joe gets a pass from the media.

speakin’ of schmatziest songs of the 70’s
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y3KEhWTnWvE

Lyrics

… Those were the days my friend
We thought they’d never end
We’d sing and dance forever and a day
We’d live the life we choose
We’d fight and never lose
For we were young and sure to have our way
La la la la la la
La la la la la la
La la la la La la la la la la
… Then the busy years went rushing by us
We lost our starry notions on the way
If by chance I’d see you in the tavern
We’d smile at one another and we’d say
… Those were the days my friend
We thought they’d never end
We’d sing and dance forever and a day
We’d live the life we choose
We’d fight and never lose
Those were the days, oh yes those were the days
La la la la la la
La la la la la la
La la la la La la la la la la
… Just tonight I stood before the tavern
Nothing seemed the way it used to be
In the glass I saw a strange reflection
Was that lonely woman really me
… Those were the days my friend
We thought they’d never end
We’d sing and dance forever and a day
We’d live the life we choose
We’d fight and never lose
Those were the days, oh yes those were the days
La la la la la la
La la la la la la
La la la la La la la la la la
la la la la la la
La la la la la la
La la la la La la la la la la
… Through the door there came familiar laughter
I saw your face and heard you call my name
Oh my friend we’re older but no wiser
For in our hearts the dreams are still the same
… Those were the days my friend
We thought they’d never end
We’d sing and dance forever and a day
We’d live the life we choose
We’d fight and never lose
Those were the days, oh yes those were the days
La la la la la la
La la la la la la
La la la la La la la la la la
La la la la la la
La la la la la la
La la la la La la la la la la

That song was playing all over the place at the 1968 World’s Fair. :)

1. Also known as a ‘barf song”.

Indeed. It’s hard to say which song is schmaltzier: this, or “Feelings” by Morris Albert.

as a schmaltziness segue reprise sequel, “Seasons in the Sun” comes after “Those were the days”

“Seasons In The Sun”
(originally by Jacques Brel)

Goodbye to you my trusted friend
We’ve known each other since we were nine or ten
Together we’ve climbed hills and trees
Learned of love and ABCs
Skinned our hearts and skinned our knees

Goodbye my friend, it’s hard to die
When all the birds are singing in the sky
Now that the spring is in the air
Pretty girls are everywhere
Think of me and I’ll be there

We had joy, we had fun
We had seasons in the sun
But the hills that we climbed
Were just seasons out of time

Goodbye papa, please pray for me
I was the black sheep of the family
You tried to teach me right from wrong
Too much wine and too much song
Wonder how I got along

Goodbye papa, it’s hard to die
When all the birds are singing in the sky
Now that the spring is in the air
Little children everywhere
When you see them, I’ll be there

We had joy, we had fun
We had seasons in the sun
But the wine and the song
Like the seasons, have all gone

We had joy, we had fun
We had seasons in the sun
But the wine and the song
Like the seasons, have all gone

Goodbye Michelle, my little one
You gave me love and helped me find the sun
And every time that I was down
You would always come around
And get my feet back on the ground

Goodbye Michelle, it’s hard to die
When all the birds are singing in the sky
Now that the spring is in the air
With the flowers everywhere
I wish that we could both be there

We had joy, we had fun
We had seasons in the sun
But the stars we could reach
Were just starfish on the beach

We had joy, we had fun
We had seasons in the sun
But the stars we could reach
Were just starfish on the beach

We had joy, we had fun
We had seasons in the sun
But the wine and the song
Like the seasons, have all gone

All our lives we had fun
We had seasons in the sun
But the hills that we climbed
Were just seasons out of time

We had joy, we had fun
We had seasons in the sun

"as a schmaltziness segue reprise sequel, 'Seasons in the Sun' comes after 'Those were the days'"

Or an attempt at a reprise. I see a contrast in mindsets between generations.

Barry McGuire is still living.

Wonder if he knew in 65 what he was singing about was prophetic?

Precious and Few . . . fun to belt out at the office or in Walmart. “. . . and if I can’t hold you in my arms, it just wouldn’t be fair.”

It’s actually a remake of a French song called “Le Moribond” which is darkly amusing. It’s about a guy who is either dying, or about to commit suicide, and he tells his wife goodbye, he tells her confessor goodbye, and he tells his wife’s lover goodbye...

Oh, I just watched that episode of NCIS (Season 17) that features that song and now it’s stuck in my head.

The 70’s had the best and the worst music. This song was awful.

“Those were the days!”
“Yep there was inflation, energy shortage, high gas prices and lines.”

I was in college with a 10-speed, a Raleigh Paramount... didn’t even notice.

The 70s was filled with music that either was depressive or obnoxious, with clothing styles and an economy to match.

My kid brother and I had our own version of the chorus:

We had joy, we had fun
We went streaking in the sun
But the cops grabbed their guns
And they shot us in the buns.

Early 70’s = Progressive, great ballads.
Southern rock and yacht rock carried the 70’s.

I read that originally it was a French song that was redone to include the death of a boyhood friend.
