Vanity - Fall Foliage in New England

Posted on 04/15/2022 5:27:49 PM PDT by Mean Daddy

My wife and I are planning on flying into DC to see our son in Arlington and then taking a rental car and driving up towards Maine for a fall foliage trip. Looking for ideas on where to stay, what to visit etc. We have no desire to go into the large cities like New York, Boston etc. unless it's to go through. Also interested in what to avoid.

We're in our late 50's and my wife will want to stop and shop, see historical, natural sites etc. We also want to have places setup to stay vs. waiting until the last moment. Any suggestions on routes as we want to take our time and not in a hurry to get anywhere. Our plan is to stay close to the ocean on the way up and western edge of New England on the way back to Arlington, Virginia. Planning on staying maybe a week.

Any insights and experiences are appreciated.

Castle in the Clouds in Moultonborough, NH has good views of fall foliage and overlooks the north shore of Lake Winnipesaukee.

One suggestion: Fly from DC to MHT or PWM and rent a car there. Otherwise, you’re looking at a pretty long drive with LOTS of traffic and tolls on the way.

Few areas are more beautiful than western NY. In the spring, summer, and fall. Even winter, sometimes.

“Few areas are more beautiful than western NY.”

That’s one reason we retired in eastern TN. We visited about 15 years ago, were driving along, and Hubby asked, “Do you know what this looks like?” Me: “It looks exactly like we’re driving around the farm.” NY

The landscape is the same. The people are the same — salt of the earth. We have four seasons in TN, although fall is much prettier in NY. I think it’s the sugar maples. Allegany Mountains ... gorgeous!

When we go back to visit, we see as many Confederate flags as we do in TN. A sign of independence (nothing to do with slavery as some say).

What we DONT have in TN is NY taxes.

Thank you. Several people have recommended starting out by going west up thru Pennsylvania and coming back down the coast. We’ve been to Gettysburg so no need to stop again.

There’s a couple little towns around us that are the same way. Always have Waze on when driving through. Thanks for the advice.

Thanks for all the info. We were last out in February 2021. We actually have a place in Arlington that is clean and reasonable.

We were in Quebec City on our honeymoon cruise. Beautiful country but the locals were fairly snobby.

How long do you have to spend? The Adirondacks in upstate NY are beautiful, as is VT and NH. Coastal ME is great, tons of places to shop, eat and stay. But you’re looking at a long drive.

VT is very eclectic, to put it nicely. In reality, it’s weird.

It's gotten worse over the decades, Burlington is woke city

We stopped in Bar Harbor on our honeymoon cruise 30 years ago. Very touristy but remember it being one of the nicer places we visited.

I rented a bicycle at Oak Bluffs and pedaled to the island, about three miles away. The bridge where Ted Kennedy ended his presidential ambitions was still there, but on either side were stout railings made from logs that weren’t there in 1969.Yep, and if you get tired you can put the bike on the bike rack on the front of the island buses.

Gritty McDuffs brews their own beer.

I prefer the Alagash White
