On 16 December, 1973, there were snow flurries in Boston. I walked right by that so called Boston Tea Party Museum which was then relatively new, open for only a few short months, perhaps better defined by the term ‘weeks.’ I thought about it a lot. I wondered about what sort of celebration would be held there. I was still a teenager. There was no celebration. The place was closed, locked down pretty tight.

That ‘Museum’ is on what I considered to be Congress Street, but I think that it was actually known as Summer Street, right near Sleeper Street. I knew the area intimately. I worked part time in a warehouse on Sleeper, but actually my office was at the intersection of Congress Street and High Street. I frequently was required to walk between the 2 sites. I got paid for those walks. I knew the area very well.

Just by the back side of that high rise is the actual site of the real Boston Tea Party. That place is called Purchase Street, but it is right there at Congress. That is the the true site of the Boston Tea Party. In those days of 1773 and before, the Atlantic Ocean reached much closer to Boston. There has been literally tons of Earth dumped there from the 2 hills which once were the root of the original name of the Town. That was ‘Tremont’ or Tri Hills. Only Beacon Hill remains. I refer to it as Be-A-Con Hill, where the seat of Massachusetts Politics lives and thrives..

Well, talking about the Tea Party on April 19th may seem to be a bit incongruent, but the truth is that since at least December of 1770, the people of the Town of Boston were in open rebellion against the Crown. They had cause.

For 5 years the ‘Colonists’ antagonized those Red Coats at every opportunity. There were lots of incidents. Just south of Boston (a few miles, 14 or so) are the Blue Hills. At the base of the highest hill, there was Prowse Farm, and a tavern where Insurrectionists gathered to plot against Britain. When certain decisions were made, bon fires were set which could be seen 14 miles north in the Towne of Boston. Sort of a ‘One if by Land, Two if by Sea’ type of communication.

I grew up in an area simply full of American History stuff. Most people of my acquaintance have no idea.
