Why can’t we put a strict age limit on using social-media sites: You have to be 18 to join TikTok, Youtube, Instagram? Why not? You’re not allowed to drink at 14 or drive at 12; you can’t vote at 15. Isn’t there a public interest here?
Applying such control would empower parents who face “all the other kids are allowed,” with an answer: “Because it’s against the law.”
When we know children are being harmed by something, why can’t the state help? In theory this might challenge economic libertarians who agree with what Milton Friedman said 50 years ago, that it is the duty of companies to maximize shareholder value. Instagram makes massive profit from ads and influencers aimed at teenagers. But a counter and rising school of conservative thought would answer: Too bad. Our greater responsibility is to see to it that an entire generation of young people not be made shallow and mentally ill through addictive social-media use.
The nature and experience of childhood has been changed by social media in some very bad ways. Why can’t we, as a nation, change this? We all have a share in this.

Dear Peggy.
As long as we are talking about exposure of children to potentially damaging information and platforms, why not prevent them from watching media ‘news’. They are way too young for that kind of propaganda, and aren’t properly prepared to vet the disinformation that is so ubiquitous in the media.
Children are being taught that the world will end from Climate Change in the next decade. They are being taught that genetically defined gender biology is fluid. They are being taught that all white people are racist and that all social issues and inequity are the fault of all white people because they are intrinsically racist. Etc. Why is it OK to expose children, who have no intrinsic prejudice or hatreds, to this kind of divisive propaganda?

I’m sorry, but just writing the words, “Peggy Noonan” requires a Barf Alert.
There is literally nothing the government won’t step in and order around.
Might work if you made it illegal for porn companies to have anyone under 21 on their site and ban the terms, “barely legal” or having the word “teen” in any of their categories or searches. Separating adult from teen and keeping sexual subjects only adult will help keep kids safer from pervert men who go after underage girls.
