WASHINGTON (TND) - A rapper named Goonew, who was reportedly shot to death, attended his own memorial at a nightclub on Sunday.
The sight apparently caused quite the controversy, even more so when pictures of the event were spread around online.
Born Markelle Marrow, Goonew was killed on March 18 by an unknown assailant in District Heights, Maryland, according to police. He was 24 years old at the time of his death.
His body was reportedly released to a funeral home following an autopsy, but fans were shocked to see him standing on stage at his own memorial event on April 3.
The event was held at the "Bliss" nightclub in Washington D.C. and called "The Last Show." Goonew's body was reportedly propped upright on stage, wearing a crown, sneakers, jeans, and an Amiri hoodie.
According to popular hip hop magazine XXL, a rapper going by the name "Black Fortune" posted clips of Goonew's body on his Instagram account.
Apparently many event-goers were confused by Goonew's appearance, and some wondered if it was a wax figure instead of his actual dead body. Black Fortune cleared up that misconception.

Prop me up beside the jukebox if I die
Lord I wanna go to heaven but I don’t
want to go tonight
Fill my boots up with sand
Put a stiff drink in my hand...
country tune
Posing the deceased like that or seated at a piano, a chair, on a motorcycle, etc. has been a “theme” at colored funerals for a while now. I don’t try to understand it.
I may request the same when I croak.
Here’s a link to a few videos of him chillin’ at his funeral:

It looks like his eyes are open.
OH LORD!
Irish funeral we have the guy on the pool table and we celebrate his life? Not a big deal here

Crude punk act G.G. Allin wanted to
commit suicide on stage
He died before that could happen,
of a drug overdose at a party as fellow
partygoers were unaware he was dying.
Wiki:
After walking the streets for almost an hour, Allin eventually went to Johnny Puke’s apartment. There, he and others continued to party and use drugs. Along with Johnny Puke, Allin ingested large amounts of heroin, on which he overdosed and slipped into an unconscious state. Sometime in the early morning of June 28, Allin died from the effects of his heroin overdose. Later that morning, Puke noticed that Allin still lay motionless in the same place where he had left him and posed for Polaroids with the corpse before calling for an ambulance. Allin was pronounced dead at the scene. He was two months short of his 37th birthday
Actually, turns out he was a pretty good rapper — though doubt if very many on FR would like his product.

Guess you never been to a TRUE IRISH funeral eh? I am a Brady and it is not out of the ordinary to have the deceased at his party......multiple other reasons to disparage an ethnic group ! Me Thinks.
Bliss to be renamed Bernie’s…
My wife’s brother died when he was three or four. He was posed, standing, with his parents. I have the picture.
I am with you on this. Saw the video, not much different then an old white guy I read about sitting in his favorite chair with his NFL team blanket and a beer. This has been common for decades. Not something I would have done with my parents they passed from cancer, but who cares if it brings closure to a family.
Just like Gary Cooper
First thing that came to mind.
Sounds like the scene in the movie “Unforgiven”.
