Rates of atrial fibrillation (AF) recurrence following ablation increase incrementally according to body mass index, both in short- and long-term follow-up, according to a study.
Jacob Toennesen, M.B.B.S. used Danish registries to identify 9,229 individuals who underwent first-time AF ablation from 2010 through 2018. Relative rates of AF recurrence were examined by body weight.
The researchers found that the median age at first-time AF ablation was lower in the morbidly obese group (60 years) than in the normal-weight group (64 years). The number of patients with a CHA₂DS₂VASc score ≥2 was higher in the morbidly obese group (65 percent) than in the normal-weight group (48 percent). Both at one-year and five-year follow-up, the risk for recurrent AF increased incrementally and significantly in overweight groups versus normal-weight patients.
"The strength of association between high body mass index and repeat atrial fibrillation after ablation was comparable to the influence of well-known factors like heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and hypertension which are typically treated in these patients," Toennesen said in a statement. "Our study suggests that overweight patients should be advised to lose weight before the intervention to improve the likelihood of being free of the arrhythmia afterwards."

“conditions expected to only concern at least 1% of the population”
Wouldn’t that make your two lists almost equal? Should 1% be (say) 75% or 90%?
A condition that affected one out of 200 is an example of one in which I would not include the Top Issues people in the ping.
Remember when Obumer changed the meaning of obese, to sell weight loss surgery? Or programs? They used 6’4” big boned men, weight lifters, truckers, measured their necks. Now a 6’6” man weighs 200-230 lbs, an little short thing like me at 5’ was then at 130 lbs we then became OBESE. They used medzines to push it, along with doctors, who now labeled you obese. These docs should take a good look in a mirror, most are OBESE, as are many in congress. So are these illegals crossing our open borders. They want to spend more money on them.
For my SIL who is 6’4” @ 400 lbs it changed his life, had slow weight loss surgery, 200 lbs in 2 yrs, lost a big box of drugs, heart, diabetes, and more. Trade off he can’t eat a lot any more, makes him very uncomfortable.
I had a cryogenic ablation about 8 years ago.
I went from death to life.
It was just a day in the life of the surgeon and staff.
It was a miracle to me.
Interesting. I AM overweight, and have AFib. My older brother and sister are NOT overweight, but both had AFib before me.
Some background:
Free Republic gets to a lot more people than the people on the Ping list. On top of that, we all have friends and family we are aware of with health concerns. It doesn't take much for a thing that hits one out of a hundred people to directly affect a number of people.
I'm redigesting study write ups down to 300 words that were already digested from a many page study, so I'm hoping the value-add I bring makes it even more understandable and applicable, while further reducing the time needed to come up to speed on it.
That brings up another reason I am doing this. I am pinging only articles that show a positive action is available to change a real problem. Providing hope to those who have doctors that don't even know this cutting edge information is a novel and noble thing to do.
If I reduced the Top Issues to some other level, it would stop quite a few pings, but likely only get topics already breaking over the next several days on television news. Yes, it would happen before the Main Stream Media got to it, but the utility of what I bring would be effectively low. After all, “ConservativeMind” saying something has less impact than “Dr. Oz.” We know he won't talk to the vast majority of these items, but I made sure people at least had a good opportunity to hear it.
And a thing that only strongly affects just your life once out of every 100 threads I post, is still saying I am helping to positively change your life in a novel way, unexplored by the MSM, about every month.
I didn’t know that about Obama changing the weight standards but it makes sense. They also keep changing the BP metrics which pisses me off no end. My parents had hypertension and so do I. I’m 68 and without meds it runs 145/80, but they want me around 120/70 “to be healthy.” Ppl aren’t dropping like flies with BP readings like mine, FFS! They’ll just keep moving the goalposts until we’re medicated up the wazoo! 🤬

I’ve lost 80 pounds in the last two years. My resting heart rate is now under 50. It was around 65.
BTW, BMI is overrated. Body fat percentage is a better measure but it is harder to measure.
I REALLY like what you are doing and really appreciate all your hard work doing this. I find many of your posts to be very informative. Thanks!
Weird timing.
Two days ago I went to the ER because I thought I might be having a heart attack. They did an EKG and said I had atrial fibrillation. Heart beating all over the place. Up to 210 and down to 48 in seconds.
It took hours to get my heart and blood pressure down, from 4:45 until almost 11:00. They wanted to admit me, but I chose to sign the waiver and go home at midnight.
I made an appointment with a cardiologist the next day.
It looks like there may be a few prior threads that might be of interest:

Thanks. I know nothing about it, so any info is much appreciated.
Here’s an interesting one from two years ago:

It shows that NAC given consistently might help, and I gave other items that might impact mitichondria, as well.
