This Walmart job starts at $95,000 a year Walmart (WMT), one of the few retail chains that runs its own trucking fleet, said it's raising the average starting salary for first-year drivers from around $88,000 to a range of $95,000 to $110,000. Walmart needs drivers to deliver goods to stores and e-commerce warehouses, as well as meet growing demand for customers' online orders. Walmart added more than 4,500 drivers last year, a record hiring spree for the company, which employs around 12,000 truck drivers. Walmart is also trying to hire new drivers internally. It started a three-month development program for its supply chain workers in select areas to earn their commercial driver's licenses and become Walmart truck drivers. A shortage of truck drivers during the pandemic has pressured supply chains. Around 70% of American freight moves on trucks, Turnover is high in the trucking industry and the job is notorious for its long hours, weeks spent away from home and low pay. It's also physically demanding. The median pay in 2020 for heavy truck and tractor-trailer drivers was $47,000, according to the latest Bureau of Labor Statistics data. Companies have raised pay to recruit drivers and stay competitive, but the trucking industry said last year it was still short 80,000 drivers.

Truckers are well paid at Walmart. You need at least 3 years OTR experience.

Or you can take a six week course from an approved school, pass a CDL test and start driving immediately for Schneider. Walmart uses them extensively to keep their own costs down. You can sometimes jump directly from Schneider to Walmart if you have a year or so of clean records.

There may be other firms with a similar relationship, but this is one of Schneider's key recruiting pitches for new graduates.

I logged 400+K miles for Werner. Up to a few years ago Walmart was pretty firm on the 3 years OTR. Like everything else, standards are lower. They probably prefer tranny truckers now.

LOL! Yeah, things have changed bigtime. I work as a middle manager for a unionized plant. It is the Teamsters, so not crazy leftwing like so many unions.

For years, you had to know somebody to even get a temp job on our production floor. Now, we have signs out advertising good paying jobs with few takers.

I read a story where a vet started up with them from the get go but had trouble keeping drivers so he turned it back into Amazon and was penalized a couple hundred grand for wear and tear on the vehicles, equipment etc.
