9 out of 10 ticks in this Pennsylvania park carried a potentially fatal neurological virus

recorded the highest-ever concentration of ticks carrying a variant of potentially fatal Powassan virus called deer-tick virus (DTV). This rare virus has the potential to cause deadly infections with lasting neurological effects, and officials fear it and other serious tick-borne illnesses may become more common in the future.

While many cases of Powassan virus are asymptomatic, those that are symptomatic can be deadly, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)(opens in new tab). Initial symptoms include headache, fever and vomiting, with the most severe cases involving neurological complications such as encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) and meningitis. Roughly 1 in 10 neuroinvasive cases of Powassan virus are fatal, and about half of the survivors of these cases experience long-term neurological health impacts.

The virus can be transmitted within 15 minutes of a tick bite, which is much faster than the time from bite to infection for many other tick-borne diseases, such as Lyme disease, in which a tick needs to be latched onto a person for more than 24 hours to transmit the disease.

I've never seen a tick here in Michigan my entire life until I found one on my kitchen counter last summer. Don't know how it got there but it really freaked me out.

I'm now hesitant to let my cat out onto the back deck.

In the past I would find an opossum living under my back deck so I would attempt to trap it and relocate it and seal up the entrance.

That was before I discovered the tick on my counter and found out that opossums eat ticks. There's one currently under my neighbor's deck that I'm now going to leave alone........

Another reason for widespread DDT spraying.

Yep, but nobody cares because ticks are not prevalent in the Dem cities where all the money goes. Who cares about those Whites getting lyme in suburbia.

Did they mention government agencies funding gain of function research?

Where they make viruses more deadly and then put the viruses into ticks and mosquitoes?

Guineas ARE tick vacuums and they are good “watch birds”! You will know if someone is in the yard/around the house.

Our experience has been that regular chickens running around the yard do a good job on ticks, too. You also have the added advantage of getting eggs along with tick control.

Put the climate change all the way at the bottom, did they? Even got in a dig at commercial development and property rights.

Why are we FRacebooking this site to death with this shit? I know who wants to ruin this site, do you?

" In a 2019 study in the Canadian Journal of Infectious Diseases and Medical Microbiology, (opens in new tab) researchers predicted that "the number of [Lyme disease] cases in the United States will increase by over 20 percent in the coming decades." Increased temperatures and humidity are likely to contribute to increased reproduction, survival and expansion of ticks. A 2021 review in the journal Insects predicts that black-legged ticks will continue to expand farther northward across Minnesota, the Dakotas and Alaska by 2050.

However, climate change is just one part of the problem; changes in land use across North America also may play a role."
