Russia doesn't want that area...but they sure made a mess of it and kept the Ukrainians busy.
This is all evolving from the 8 year war in the Donbass region....and it's civil war.

To be clear, the Russian invasion of the city of Sumy had already failed weeks ago. Russian had only managed to occupy some empty land surrounding Sumy. What is “liberated” is the last territory in the surrounding oblast, also named Sumy.
