Four times as I recall they went back in the past. Now the one where he read the preamble of the Constitution called The Omega Glory took place in the 23rd century.

Had she known the consequences of her continued life, Edith Keeler would have gladly chosen death to save billions of peoples lives................................

Writer Harlan Ellison became upset over the revisions made by showrunner Gene Roddenberry and others. I wonder the revisions were and what was Harlan Ellison's original story.

Ellison went on to dedicate his acceptance speech to criticizing producers who adjust writers’ work – with Roddenberry in the audience. So perhaps some of those involved with this episode didn’t quite live up to its moral about letting go of regrets. The essance of 'longing'... that you can't give the regret up. Easily or otherwise.

I’m guessing the original ending was different? The ending of A Boy and His Dog is an absolute classic.

What the difference between his version and what they did? The general plot was the same, but the stories were very different.
In Ellison's version, instead of McCoy going back in time and changing history, it was a random crewman who had been caught dealing drugs on the Enterprise and was being taken down to the planet to be executed by a firing squad. The Guardians of Forever were 9 foot tall aliens rather than a single round portal. Also, Spock was the one who let Edith Keeler die, because Kirk couldn't bring himself to sacrifice her.
IMHO, every change that was made to Ellison's original version improved the story.

Bit of trivia - that episode was largly shot in Mayberry (the 40 acre back lot in Culver City). Here's Kirk with "Edith Keeler" (Joan Collins) walking past a familiar business front.
