Tacoma Narrows Bridge tolls will be reduced by 75 cents beginning in September, with the intent that they remain at that rate until the span is paid off in 10 years.
The decrease is the result of Substitute Senate Bill 5488, which requires transfers of $3.25 million from the general fund to the toll bridge account each quarter until June 2032, for a total of $130 million. After the House changed the bill on Saturday, the Senate had to concur on Thursday, which sponsor Sen. Emily Randall, D-Bremerton, said it would.
Rates — currently set at $5.25 with a Good To Go! pass, $6.25 at the toll booths and $7.25 for pay by mail — will be reduced to $4.50, $5.50 and $6.50, respectively. The rollback applies only to two-axle vehicles because, “We’re trying to target working families, not freight,” Randall said.
Annual savings for a person who commutes every day will be about $200.
“I’m excited for the relief that working people on the peninsula are going to feel in their pocketbooks,” Randall said.

PING!
Galloping Gertie
A look at this country on bidenflation which is lowered the value of the dollar thus cutting rates also if you’ve a wheel barrow to carry your cash.
How does keeping the latter's costs high not affect working families, you expletive-deleted?!
How close is Tacoma to Portland?
Maybe the unwillingness to go to Portland is affecting revenues of this bridge?
Tacoma, WA is a least 100 miles away from Portland.
The bridge connects Tacoma and Gig Harbor in Washington. The closest city to Portland is Vancouver, WA in the southwest part of the state.
And Tacoma is in the northern part of the state.
“until it’s paid”
LOL ROTFLMAO HA HA HA HA HAAAAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!
That’s a good one.
When Governor Hogan lowered tolls on various facilities in Maryland, he did it only for passenger vehicles also. So you still had some large trucks, which paid through the nose big time at 6 times the rate of passenger vehicles at the higher rates, presumably avoiding the toll booths and wearing down secondary roads, etc.
The power to tax is the power to destroy.
And it does.
Very efficiently.
Thanks Tol, and it is a step in the right direction. People respond to tolls and not always in the way politicians want...so I guess they felt they had to do something here.
It was free when I would drive over it going to Port Orchard for work in the late 90s.
Was the newer (southbound) bridge built yet, or was there still just the one bridge in place for both directions?
I almost moved to Gig Harbor, instead I found a safe condominium downtown Tacoma. The toll and traffic were the deciding factors.
Awfully expensive area to live, I turned down a high 6-figure job at Boeing in 2006 to move back to the East Coast. Crime and the left leaning people are another reason. They don’t like country folks.
“Maybe the unwillingness to go to Portland is affecting revenues of this bridge?”
Tacoma is just as bad as Portland... The hold western side of Washington State is crazy.
I guess that was back when there was only one bridge for both directions. Left Western Washington 20 years ago and will never return. The most beautiful place to live in the summer but liberals have destroyed it.
Freight DOES target working families, geniuses!! Impacts the cost of everything.
Morons.
