Hot dogs, rightfully, loom large in the American imagination. And just as our nation houses a breathtaking spread of regional pizza styles, America’s many, many different hot dogs inspire continual creativity and spark passionate arguments.
Each regional variation on a hot dog is a reflection of the community that loves it. Every last one deserves a spot in our hearts and our digestive tract, so let’s dive into a compendium of these United States of Hot Dogs. Ready?
One quick thing before we get started: You’re not going to see Dodger Dogs or Fenway Franks on this list. That’s on purpose. If a dog is only available in one place, that’s a house special, not a regional style. Instead, we tried to find hot dog varieties that are associated with the wider place they come from, not just a particular restaurant. Got it? Okay. Let’s proceed.

I can do without the jalapenos, but mustard and onions do it for me. Wrigley Field hot dogs were the best, they give you a naked dog and leave the mustard and onions outside for you to put on, plus relish is overrated.
That said , and maybe sacrilegiously so but I've developed a taste for Sabrettes recently. The original ''dirt water'' dog.
Yup. I’m a Jersey boy. Know exactly what you mean.
That’s not just a hot dog.
It’s a meal.
My favorite dog is a natural skin grilled, served on baquette bread with mustard and kraut. Grew up in NY so the standard dog has mustard and kraut. Remembered the first time going to the deep south and they looked cross-eyed at me when I complained the dog didn’t have kraut (”duh what’s that?”).
“and kids don’t know any better. “
Lol. I like Boars Head uncured beef franks but they are pricey so I always tell the wife to buy “swill dogs” for the unrefined palate’s of the small ones.
“developed a taste for Sabrettes”
The NYC street cart dog.
There is one about 30 miles away. I ordered a 5 lb. pack of the hot dogs so it may be next summer before I will want more!
I crave a hot dog once in a while and Nathan’s... meh.
Lafayette Coney Island in downtown Detroit and their chili.
good call!!
Deitz and Watson are great. Made in Philly. Another PA hotdog from a smaller manufacturer that’s worth trying is Hippys… big meaty dogs with a great flavor.
It’s a societal thing. ‘Brats’ are usually associated with Yankees....................
That’s the wurst that could happen....................
