How sad to think this will stain his magnificent career contributing so much to the sum of human knowledge through running, jumping, throwing, and catching

Athletic accomplishments are ephemeral. The provide no long lasting contribution to humanity beyond a shared appreciation for excellence and achievement and a model for people to aspire to. Which is a significant legacy, truth be told.

But in the moment they provide a great entertainment and escape for people. The world isn't just about reading poetry, going to the opera, and reading the constitution and the federalist papers. Sometimes a guy throwing a ball brings people together in a shared experience like few things do these days. There's value in that.
