29 Minnesotans suffer norovirus symptoms after eating raw oysters

They fell ill after eating the raw oysters at Travail Kitchen in Robbinsdale on March 20. The restaurant notified public health authorities and has since stopped serving the oysters, according to officials.

The Stellar Bay Gold oysters had originated from Deep Bay 14-8 in British Columbia, and were harvested on March 10. Public health agencies are encouraging people to check shellstock tags and discard oysters from the particular harvest.

To mitigate the spread, health experts say to wash your hands after using the bathroom, and before preparing food for others.

If they weren’t wearing a mask, what did they expect?

YUK!!!

Why anyone would want to eat raw oysters is beyond me.

Food is cooked for a reason, and this is one of them, aside from the gag factor of eating something while it is still alive.

I like to eat raw oysters, never got sick from them. I like the way they slide down into your stomach with a taste of the seawater they came from.

I did get sick once from eating raw fish at midnight buffet on a Royal Caribbean cruise. It wasn't oysters though.

Raw oysters are a good hot sauce delivery vehicle.

I once listened while a local girl tried to talk an inland woman through eating some cooked oysters. She was poking at its stomach contents, and the girl said “That green stuff is kelp. Oysters love kelp,” and I’m thinkin’ “Oysters love raw sewage, if that’s what floats past them,” but I didn’t say it.

10 days is a bit long to hold them.

If 29 showed symptoms, probably a lot more had problems, but just “walked it off.”

I won an oyster eating contest one year, 159 in whatever alotted time. My wife figures our first born was 9 months later. Cause & effect?

I lost the following year to two Marines. I still enoy them from time to time but not in that volume. Anyone for an oyster shooter?

It wasn’t because the oysters were raw, it was because somebody in the kitchen doesn’t wash their hands after using the bathroom.

A New Englader who doesn’t like oysters? Say it ain’t so!

Oysters are an example of our Father deciding to show His extravagant love for his children.

His casual generosity is ever a reminder to humility and humble thanks for His gifts.

Not exactly. It is known that fecal material can enter water where seafood grows and collect in in that seafood. Oysters are a relatively common source because they are frequently eaten raw.

I used to love raw oysters years ago, but no way I would down them now.

I’d guess someone knows how to ‘Pasteurize’ them.

Eating raw oysters is tasty and fun but hazardous. Norovirus is not the worst thing that can happen to you. Shellfish contaminated by red tide algae can be fatal.

I had them years ago with no harm.
These days I steer clear because I’m on immunosuppressants, making me more susceptible to getting the nasty little critters.
