One way to hold small amounts of gold.

I carry five Austrian Ducats (.1 oz each) in my wallet behind my ID card. I have used them a couple of times to make purchases.

You can also get "Cards" of gold or silver that are divided into tenths or grams that you can easily break off. The smaller cards are just a bit thicker than an ordinary credit card and carry easily in your wallet.
