The case was a contingency case so the plaintiffs didn't have to actually foot all those fees up front. The way it works when you're seeking legal fees is that the lawyers track their work, apply a reasonable hourly rate, and then that can be added to the verdict if there are punitive damages awarded. The latter point is because you can only get non-statutory fees if punitive damages are deemed appropriate.
Not sure how costs were done in this particular case, but those may have been advanced by the law firm based on a contingent verdict as well.
