A Disney production coordinator has revealed that the company is working to promote transgender and non-binary characters, adding that the company has been 'really open to exploring queer stories.'
Allen March was speaking at an internal Disney event as part of the company's 'Reimagine Tomorrow' initiative.
The scheme, launched in September, is described by Disney as 'our way of amplifying underrepresented voices and untold stories as well as championing the importance of accurate representation in media and entertainment.'
It vows that 50 percent of characters and content would be from underrepresented groups by 2022.
March said he worked on the Marvel comic story Moon Girl, executive produced by Laurence Fishburne, which tells the story of a nine-year-old genius named Lunella Lafayette who forges a telepathic bond with a gigantic dinosaur, after accidentally bringing it into the present through a time vortex. The animated show will run on the Disney Channel this summer, though an exact debut date has not been set.
March told the online forum held Monday that he kept a tally of LGBTQ+ characters in the film, in a bid to ensure there was greater diversity on screen.
'I've had the privilege of working with the Moon Girl team for the last two years, and they've been really open to exploring queer stories,' he said.
'I'm on the production side.
'Part of the work that I feel like I can put in is, making sure that - we take place in modern day New York.
