It may also be from a stroke or series of TIA.

Relative for whom I cared became aphasic after suffering psychological trauma. No speech for probably ten years. On her death bed, she struggled to speak, but could not. Very sad for her and me.

Sorry about your father. Yes, I heard aphasia can be an early symptom of alzheimers.
