Looking for a Job but Being Ghosted by the HR? Here’s What to Do.

We asked HR managers about the best ways to catch their attention – and to keep it.

It’s anxiety on steroids when you enthusiastically invest in your application for your dream job and keep waiting to hear back from the hiring manager. If you don’t get an answer for a few days or weeks, you can say hello to that familiar spate of self-questioning coupled with debilitating attacks on your self-esteem. It’s anything but healthy and certainly not productive.

According to a survey done by job aggregation site Indeed, employers have been ghosting their candidates more after the pandemic struck. Nearly 77 percent of job seekers reported that they have been ghosted at various stages of the recruitment process.

Ever met an HR person that actually proved useful? Me neither.

For the most part, I agree with you.

I've run into recruiters who were pretty good overall. The minority, to be sure.

I've run into a couple of decent benefits specialists over the years.

But as far as HR Generalists, I've only met one that was worth a damn. Funny thing is that she was raised in China and had an Asian POV rather than a politically-correct modern American one. In other words, she didn't buy into victim mentality, made sure the paperwork was correct to protect the company against frivolous improper termination lawsuits, etc. But she was the only one that I thought was worth squat.

In the military you would have been called “Chief” or referred to reverentially as a “Mustang”. Doesn’t seem to work the same way in civilian life for some reason.

In 1979 as a senior I interviewed with Boeing, Seattle on campus for an engineering job. Hadn’t heard from them in over 6 weeks, neither had any of my friends who interviewed, either.

I wrote their HR a letter and told them it was rude and inconsiderate to not only not reply to me one way or the other but also to the others that interviewed. I told them I was going to advise the campus career center so they could make any decision they might think appropriate with regard to on-campus interviews in future.

About 10 days later I got an offer in the mail from them. And I ghosted THEM.

"But I am NOT a Project Manager. That takes skills I don’t have."

That's the easiest job to have. All you do is delegate. If a long-haired, Harley riding, ex-enlisted swabbie can pull it off, anyone can. ;)

#25 The company I retired from had the HR dept people quit all sudden like about 4 years ago and new people were hired. One of whom was a rude person. I guess she did not understand HR should mean nice. Well, during this plandemic the new HR dept was replaced by a 3rd party company.
