Animal rescuers have issued a desperate plea to find a puppy bizarrely stolen in a late-night raid by a thief wearing a clown mask.

An intruder, wearing the strange disguise, entered the RSCPA Dakabin shelter, north of Brisbane, on Saturday around 2am.

They allegedly cut open the cage with an angle grinder and ran off with the puppy.

Cashew, the four-month old female Staffordshire Bull Terrier, was due to be picked up that day by her new adopted family.

The list of suspects would probably be pretty small.

• Who else looked at or wanted the puppy other than the family that was going to get him?
• Who works or volunteers at the shelter who knew about the puppy?
• Were there any previous owners that might have come for the puppy?

I just hope they find the dog.

My greatest fear are people who steal dogs to either use them in dog fighting circles or for bait dogs to train fighting dogs.
