A valid point. But, there are several battery powered “Driveway alarms” that alert the base station in the house when a “Feral” of a certain size crosses it’s beam. A couple of those might do the trick

its the beauty of potatoes that they are underground....
story I read here on FR is that the Irish loved potatoes because they could plant them and hide them in the ground and the roving Brits could not find them easily.

I have often wondered if roving mobs of hungry ferals would defeat your purpose and efforts at home gardening. You can’t stay awake 24/7. I can't stay awake 24/7. My electronic intruder alarm can. Add some dogs, and you have a good warning system, if backed up with a rifle.
Plus, above-ground part of potato plants don't look edible to someone who doesn't know what he's looking for.
