I did see it, haunting and very well done. Then again I love Caitriona Balfe, very easy on the eyes. Gave a more honest view of the 1970's Troubles, that it was both Catholic and Orange factions that created the tinderbox in Northern Ireland.
So you reccomend Dune?
I haven’t seen it yet. I get mixed reports on it.
You’d love the scene in”Once upon. A time in Hollywood” where Brad Pitt’s character fights Bruce Lee.
I read the first 3 books years ago. Good read. I think there is going to be another Dune part 2 movie. This version is more woke. I liked the 2002 version better.
I thought it better than the 1985 one. It’s different from the book and really seems designed for someone who hasn’t read it. The casting was just so-so. Very fast paced. I enjoyed it, but I can see why some people wouldn’t. I like that they made the Baron very dark and non-gay, he seems much more threatening, rather than campy like the other movie. Worth seeing, but then I like science fiction. I do think they made Paul much too old, he’s supposed to be a young teen; trained by martial arts masters and mentats, but still a kid you wouldn’t bet on surviving the attack. Blew it with Lady Jessica, sniveling, frightened.
I loved the new WSS. It’s a much better film than the 1961 version.
What did you think of the TV series (2000-ish) - the one with John Hurt as the Duke?
Appreciate the comments.
The book is so far beyond any movie or series; very deep, and really ahead of its time. Herbert was making a point years before the oil embargo, that whoever controls oil has a massive lever over those who are addicted to it.
He also made fun of the ‘savior’ trope, where some person from an advanced culture, thrust into a ‘primitive’ one raises them up and saves them; Paul does that, but at the cost of unleashing a war that kills billions (second book), kind of mocking the ‘hero’s journey’ concept while using it.... Worth the read and then judging the movie gets a lot harder.
Meh, until they got to book II, which seemed a tad more interesting. I think the acting was weird, they seemed unclear as to if this was supposed to be a stage play, a TV series, or a movie. They did get that Leto II was somebody/thing that represented the danger of dictatorship and tyranny.
It was supposed to be a warning, I think, the first 3 books, about the danger of mixing religious fanaticism and political rule.
At least they ‘got’ that Paul is not a good guy, they kind of got that better than either movie, Paul is damaged goods, he’s the Osama Bin Laden- scion of wealth twisting the fanatical loyalty of his followers to bring death to many. You root for the kid who is banished to the desert, his father killed his House destroyed only to find out he was the trigger for billions dying.....
I have not seen any of the movies nominated for Best Picture, but I can accurately predict that the winner will be:
... whichever one is the most woke.
I predict I won’t be watching. Much like the Democrat convention I’ll read of the lowlights here on FR. I recognize some of the names mentioned but of course many I don’t. For those that enjoy this stuff knock yourself out.
The only one I’ve seen is Dune......my husband liked it.
I wouldn’t mind seeing Denzel do Shakespeare...........or the movie Belfast or Tyrian do Cyrano
The others....meh
“Dune was a disappointment, so much hype”
Only one of the nominated movies I have seen. Liked the original books, 1st Dune movie was not too bad, this one maybe a bit better. Really hard story to do on film. Wife can’t wait for 2nd installment to come out, I will watch it at theater also.
A lot of people love WSS. I’m sure that it’s a good film (I DO read a lot of reviews) and that I’ll see it eventually. I’m just not very big on musicals, though I will make an exception for My Fair Lady and The Music Man.
I laughed out loud at that scene.
Pretty much sums up my feelings on the whole thing.
Any predictions on the ratings?
Even lower. People don’t go to movies any more. All but one of our theaters is gone out of business since Covid, and even before we lost two.................
