I like Bannon and watch the show every chance I get -- but his take on Russia, Ukraine, and the West is plain wrong-minded. Putin is a dangerous nogoodnik who needs to go. Yeah, Lindsey Graham is wrong to call for Putin's assassination, but the offense is against prudence and not principle.

And no, NATO and the EU were not provoking Russia by aiming at Ukraine as a member or at least as an ally. Indeed, Russia's fundamental national interests would be served by such developments because it would help to stabilize Ukraine's government and solidify it as a peaceful and reliable democracy.

Unfortunately, that is not what Putin wants, because he has long sought to dominate Ukraine, detach choice bits of its territory, and subvert Ukraine as a democratic nation. Bannon seems to lose sight of the key point of American national strategy from WW II to Reagan and Trump: that our national interests are best served by stable, friendly democratic governments.

Russia's invasion of Ukraine poses a simple choice: do we stand with a friendly democracy when it is under brutal assault by a thuggish autocracy that hates us? I say that the choice is easy and clear: we must stand with the friendly democracy, Ukraine, in its existential struggle with our enemy, Russia under Putin.
