Chances are your local news affiliate has already reported on it happening in your neighborhood: criminals drilling into and draining gas tanks to steal the sweet, expensive nectar inside, leaving their victims with not only no fuel but also a hefty repair bill. It happened to one Pennsylvania woman, who said the thief stole the gas right out of her Nissan Rogue as it sat parked outside her home. There are similar stories coming out of California, too, and Missouri, and Wisconsin.

I remember hearing that in the 70’s it was gas caps being removed to get to the fuel. Within months there were locked gas caps being sold.

It has been going on for years. Neighbor had their gas taken that way a couple years ago.

Stealing catalytic converters is HUGE here in CA. NOW I guess they can drain the gas while they are at it!! Catalytic converters are VERY expensive to replace I imagine a new gas tank can’t be cheap either!

I agree about the garage of endless stuff.

Before my medical misadventure from January which I am still recovering from, I was making great progress on cleaning out.

There are one or two hefty items are well outside what I am allowed to move. As for the rest I have to mount hooks on the wall. I don’t trust myself with power tools.

I don’t like leaving my Tacoma parked outside.

There are several on my street that have mini car lots against our HOA.

At least one double garage was crammed full of boxes and who knows what.

Tons and tons of people live in homes or apartments without garages. I’m not one now, but I know plenty of people without them.

Wouldn’t the drilling cause friction? Therefore, fire or explosion?

So, in my feeble little brain, if I can’t plug something in using my 50ft orange extension cord, fugetaboutit. How many existing houses have the required power service to charge EVs? Well, other than a ‘hoveround’ that is. And, where we live, there are some pretty long stretches that you don’t even see another car for a long time. And some places(a lot actually) ZERO cell service.

I am wondering how that does not happen with nearly every attempt.

I once met a guy who had tried to tap into a power line, but apparently he didn’t realize that the skinny wires at the top of the pole were running at 1380 volts.

It didn’t work out quite as he had planned.

In the Abbey Hoffman book “Steal this Book” from the 60’s, he had a thing where you would drive your hippe vw van into a closed gas station, park it over the tank fill ports, open the hatch door in the floor in the back, drop a line down and pump away.

No doubt a newer version of that attack will be widespread.

I wonder what a remote start during the operation would do?

It depends on the vehicle you attempt to put a locking gas cap on. It can mess with components of the “anti-pollution” system. I had a Dodge Caravan in California and it would blow a pump out within a day when I put on a locking gas cap.

Years ago I realized why you needed to buy a house with an 8 car garage. It increased the odds of at least garaging one vehicle.

I just moved to the desert in Ca. the beach area became unlivable homeless and crime EVERYWHERE, I am now living in a community with a HUGE gate AND a guard house at the gate which is manned 24/7! There are no homeless tents anywhere it is to damn hot for them to live outside!! I made so much money on my home at the beach I came here paid cash, ANYONE that wants to live on the beaches here TODAY are complete fools, the cost is astronomical and you are no longer safe living there NO ONE does a damn thing about it!! I feel really sorry for the young family that bought my home they are in for a RUDE AWAKENING they were so excited about living on the beach!! They could SEE all of the tents EVERYWHERE what the hell did they think, that people were just camping???

Had this happen to me. Use to Van pool to work in a large 12 person van. We filled it up on Friday and left it in the park and ride. Somebody drilled a hole in the tank and bailed. Received a call from the police, the parking lot was covered in gas and the fire department had to do a clean up.
