But as a former lifeguard, you are to avoid and not jump first to save a drowning individual. You are supposed to first throw a life preserver and then, if necessary, swim up behind them and grab them, the idea being that if they see you coming and start thrashing and pull you down to gain leverage for air and then you both drown.
People don’t think at a moment like that. You’re absolutely right, though, and I think boaters need more training.
An awful question I torture myself with is would I thrash and pull my wife down to gain leverage for air. The survival instinct is so overpowering.
Shielding her from gunfire would cause the protective instinct to kick in.. easy. But going down for the third time might involuntarily negate all my loving intentions.
