While accepting her award for Best Director at this weekend’s Critics Choice Awards, Jane Campion began her acceptance speech beautifully… And then she said one sentence too many, and managed to drag two of the world’s greatest athletes into some needless drama.
Venus and Serena Williams, also in attendance at the award show since the film about their father, King Richard, was nominated, at first received glowing praise from Campion in her speech.
“It’s absolutely stunning to be here tonight among so many incredible women,” Campion said, praising Halle Berry, and then the Williams sisters. “What an honor to be in the room with you. I’ve taken up tennis — I truly have — and Will [Smith], if you want to come over and give me lessons, I would truly love it. I actually had to stop playing because I’ve got tennis elbow. I’d also like to give my love out to my fellow… the guys. The nominees,” she said, referring to the five other men in the Best Director category, Paul Thomas Anderson, Kenneth Branagh, Guillermo del Toro, Steven Spielberg, and Denis Villeneuve.
Then Campion went on to add, “Serena and Venus you are such marvels, however you do not play against the guys like I have to.”

So she told the truth and gets dragged?
She helped make this cancel culture world.
It doesn’t make sense.
It just means you won’t see her on the dance floor when you’re watching reruns of Soul Train.
But a female director has to compete with all other nominated directors, regardless of their 57 genders.
How ever it was meant, it comes across as unneccessary belittling.
People just can’t be grateful and accept their awards any more. They have to get their dig in.
You'd understand if you hung out on Twitter for a while.
Be offended is like mainlining dope for those Woke sewer rats.
Ah.
She didn’t get that across well.
You’ve explained it. But it’s a dumb analogy which makes the attempted humor in it wooden.
I don’t necessarily ‘like’ her, after reading her remarks to actor Sam Elliot who dared to dislike her movie, but these remarks right here are not really so bad. She was riffing on everybody. Many award winners get nervous standing up there alone. They chatter on, often unsure of when to stop chattering.
Women film directors are not as common as they should be but it isn’t by necessity and they don’t have a biological disadvantage like athletes ?
> It doesn’t seem offensive to me. <
It’s not. But the cancel-culture folks need a steady source of victims. It’s kinda like during the French Revolution. Madame Guillotine must be fed.
I don’t know if it’s offensive. But it is dumb. You just got an award for making a bio pic about these 2 people and their dad, then in your speech imply your accomplishment is bigger?! Not so smart. Like do you think somebody is going to make a bio pic about you making the bio pic? Then maybe your accomplishment ain’t that great.
Here’s my expert analysis: Whatever.
“Women film directors are not as common as they should be”
How do you make that determination?
“How ever it was meant, it comes across as unneccessary belittling.”
I don’t see it as belittling them, as much as raising herself. But yes, it was a stupid, unnecessary attempt at humor.
Yeah. Who gives a chit.
But directing a film is essentially an intellectual endeavor, and I'm not sure we're going to find substantial biological distinctions between the male and female intellect.
Only because you' re not a paper-skinned liberal fairy looking for things to get offended about.
