I heard on FOX that he was wearing a NEW YORK TIMES BADGE yet the NY Times said he wasn’t employed with them. So, possibly a rogue or a previously fired reporter trying to make a name by pushing the limits? You need $$$ and backing to report in a war zone, translators, drivers and security all cost a lot of money.

Another thread said that he had done assignments for them, but not since 2015. I suspect he was captured by one side, who then tried to verify his credentials, when they found out they were fake, he lost the ‘protection’ of being a journalist and had to deal with the consequences of being considered a spy.
