re: George Orwell quote

Not sure source of the Orwell quote but guessing it is from Orwell’s Most Interesting book, “Homage to Catalonia” where he travels to Spain to report on the Civil War and ends up joining the battle against the fascists. He gets shot in the neck at one point - survives - and continues on. Wonderful look at the total confusion in war — at times not knowing who he is shooting at - friend or foe? I recommend it to everyone. Time period 1936 to 1938.

Of course I read the 2 Orwell books. 1984 when I was 15, Animal Farm perhaps a year or 2 following. Even then, I did not fully understand.

I think that people must live through things in order to consolidate their thoughts and then contend with the consequences of poor choices. So many are not there, likely never shall be.

I read `Orwell, then at my first opportunity to vote, I was all McGovern. Later I was Carter. Even while in the Army I was Carter. It took me until Mondale, to have the scales removed from my eyes. My children were very small, I was working 80+ hours each week, endlessly. Mondale spoke of raising taxes.

I was done with those assholes forever. I regret my tardiness in coming on board. Still, though, it has been nigh 40 years since my epiphany, since my wake up call. I so feel awful regarding my sluggishness on these notions.

I am trying to compensate for my misspent youth. Truth is, my children are persons whom I can be proud of. Never caught up in the BS. I made that.
