"How would Johnny Carson have said the joke?

Mentioning Carson and colbert in the same thread is blasphemy.

Oh lord, shades of the Univ. of MD’s stupid Solar Car Project.

I graduated 30 years ago there. The Solar Car was the on-going never-ending project and competition they worked on. Mostly grad students.

I once asked how this could ever be practical, because the car was a very low wedge, completely covered by solar panels on top. This thing would never be able to carry a family or groceries. What is the point?

Have you done the math on hybrid? Adds a ton of expense that used to be difficult to recoup with gas savings. But maybe in a month. Electric is great if you charge overnight 98% of the time. No oil changes, no gas stations ever is really nice.

We’ve gone from Covid-19 to Petro-22.

I will offer the likelihood that Mr. Colbert is chauffeured to his night ly NYC theater gig in a gas powered SUV.

Yep I wonder about that.

Somebody on another thread said he lives in Manhattan. So, odds are he doesn’t even drive his Tesla very much. Or maybe he keeps that Tesla at some weekend/vacation place, and doesn’t drive around Manhattan at all.

Didn’t some countries say they would be banning the sale of new gas/diesel vehicles in 2030 ? so some people will never get another vehicle , kind of like Hitler and his Volkswagen Bug people put the money down and never got the car ,LOL

I still don’t get his joke. He said he’s willing to pay $15 a gallon for gas, because he drives a Tesla. What is the joke?

First of all, Colbert is painfully unfunny, so don't try too hard to get his "jokes". But the joke in this instance means that since he drives a Tesla, he does not care how high gas prices soar because he won't be buying any of it. Only non-elite schmucks who can't afford Teslas will be paying those prices.

Can you say brown out?

Actually, 0 to 1 is an infinite increase.

0 to 0.00000000000000000000000000000001 is an infinite increase.

1 to 2 is a 100% increase.

“If he doesn’t buy gas at all because he drives a Tesla, how can he say he’s willing to pay more for a product he doesn’t even buy in the first place?”

That’s the joke.

Do any electric cars have a solar panel on the roof?

I’m sure the technology exists.

The real question is “How does the value of the electricity produced by the rooftop solar panels compare to the cost of adding them, along with the circuitry to charge the batteries with that power?”

This is the same behavior that happened during the last big gas price spike under Bush 43. People panicked near the end of it, traded in their trucks for econoboxes. Within a few months oil went from $147 to $27 and they were all so angry!

They lost thousands on trading to save a couple of hundred bucks worth of gas and then were stuck with toy cars that would cost thousands to trade off again.

This time they are falling for Biden’s chicanery. Even at today’s price, gas is cheaper (adjusted for inflation) than it has been for most of the last 30 years!

People do the dumbest things with their money and then complain there’s no way to “get ahead”.

The other surprise happens when after buying an EV, they call their insurance company.

Oops.

I would like to see a comparison of an electric bill before and after the purchase of an E.V.

Funny you NEVER hear any of those reports.

Tesla is a good company but why don't they publish the cost of replacing the battery pack.
