55 Tons of Lettuce Fed to Florida’s Starving Manatees

More than 55 tons of lettuce have been fed to starving Florida manatees as part of an experimental program to help the slow-moving marine mammals since their natural food is being destroyed by water pollution, wildlife officials said Wednesday.

The lettuce, funded by more than 1,000 individual donations, is offered to manatees that gather in the warm water discharge near a power plant on Florida's east coast as they typically do during cold months.

Officials from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said in a conference call that the feeding program has made a difference. “That's a substantial amount,” said Ron Mezich, feeding program coordinator for the Florida wildlife commission. “We're not done yet.”

Well that settles it. With wind and solar all the manatees are goners....

Two trips to Costco in the last 2 weeks, the second today. No lettuce either trip.

They’re feeding it to flipping sea cows!

Second most expensive: Celery wins, and it has floss for your gums, too. Celery: When you want to pay for water with string in it.

we’re ruining Florida’s eco system with these creatures. They’re not even native to the US; they’re from the West Indies.

Surely you're not as dumb as you're acting, at least I hope not.

They most certainly are native to the U.S., at least they've been here a lot longer than any people have. The species is known as the West Indian Manatee but doesn't mean they're from the West Indies, it's just a name. The Florida subspecies evolved around the gulf coast and has been there since prehistoric times.

They're hardly ruining the ecosystem, there's only about 6000 of them and most Floridians, myself included, have never seen one in the wild. They congregate around power plant discharge pipes in the winter because it's warm. If I lived in the water I'd do the same thing, it makes perfectly good sense to me.

If you want to save Florida's ecosystem then start culling northern liberals instead. We've got about 6000 of them an hour pouring into Florida and they eat or destroy everything in sight.

“Umm, I don’t think lettuce really has a lot of nutritional value...”

True of Iceberg, Romaine, Spinach and Kale are pretty healthy.

I’ve been swimming in springs where they hang out too - it’s like swimming next to an old style volkewagon bug. Sweet nature but huge...
