More than 55 tons of lettuce have been fed to starving Florida manatees as part of an experimental program to help the slow-moving marine mammals since their natural food is being destroyed by water pollution, wildlife officials said Wednesday.

The lettuce, funded by more than 1,000 individual donations, is offered to manatees that gather in the warm water discharge near a power plant on Florida's east coast as they typically do during cold months.

Officials from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said in a conference call that the feeding program has made a difference. “That's a substantial amount,” said Ron Mezich, feeding program coordinator for the Florida wildlife commission. “We're not done yet.”

“That’s what 55 tons of lettuce and a continuous radiation bath will get you. Godzilla, move over!”

I’m envisioning a manatee version of the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man from Ghostbusters!!!!

Why exactly are they feeding them?

Because they vote democrat. They have underwater drop boxes.

Feeding them lettuce? What choice of salad dressings and toppings do they offer the manatees?

So, we’re about to head into some serious food shortages, if forecasters are correct, and these people are feeding perfectly good lettuce to MANATEES???

Just another sign that we’re truly un-serious as a country.

Umm, I don’t think lettuce really has a lot of nutritional value...

I didn’t know lettuce grew underwater. Why are we feeding them food that God didn’t plan for? What could go wrong ?

I’m waiting for someone to say that this crisis was manufactured by the people who worked so hard to “save the manatees.” Now we have a problem of overpopulation.

I’ve yet to see a thin manatee... Yet my grocery bill is staggering but 55 tons of lettuce for fat mammals.

There are almost no calories in a head of lettuce.
Might as well fed them wax fruit.

What? No mention of global warming? They're going to have their "journalist's license" revoked.

I’m sure the hugh manatees chomp and go all crazy for heads of lettuce. Ever feed lettuce to a rabbit? They chomp it bounce all over in excitment. Then when it races thru their guts like the water it is, it will come out as fast as it went in all the while screwing up their digestion and electrolytes. But they look to be enjoying it and it really makes us feel so damned good about ourselves to be doing something that really matters.

The manatees love the warm water discharges of power plants.

There is a lake beside our local plant that had a healthy population of Tilapia and was warmed from the plant’s water discharge. When it was switched over from coal to natural gas all the Tilapia died.

It’s been described as the most expensive way for a farmer to deliver water to the customer.
