'Forgotten' antibiotic recovered for resistant bacterial infections (New/old “last resort” antibiotic option - cheap “fosfomycin”)

The results make it possible to expand the treatment options for infections for which few alternatives exist, while at the same time helping to avoid increasing resistance to the usual drugs. To this end, the study looked at the safety and efficacy of intravenous fosfomycin, an old "forgotten" antibiotic, as a possible treatment for bacterial infections resistant to the most commonly used antibiotics.

The study was carried out between June 2014 and December 2018 and involved 22 Spanish hospitals. Now the results are being published are analyzing the data collected over that period. The findings are based on the analysis of 143 adult patients with invasive urinary tract infection by multidrug-resistant strains of E. coli.

The impact of these results lies in being a possible substitute for the "last resort" antibiotics currently used, which may help to prevent the overuse of these antibiotics causing more resistance. As such, the renewed use of fosfomycin, whose effectiveness has been shown, is excellent news for patients concerned. The study also revealed that there are risk groups for whom this drug is not recommended, namely patients over 80 years of age or patients with heart failure.

The trial was conducted in conjunction with the Spanish Network for Research in Infectious Pathology.

Looks like “Big Pharma” saw this one coming.

Fosfomycin is used to treat urinary tract infection and cystitis (bladder infection) in women. This medicine is an antibiotic. It works by killing bacteria or preventing their growth. However, this medicine will not work for colds, flu, or other virus infections. Feb 1, 2022

The definition of an antibiotic.

“Looks like “Big Pharma” saw this one coming.”

Not sure what your point is

Not sure it’s forgotten. Use it all the time for ESBL E. coli

It likely would work for some minor stuff, but it would be idiotic to use it.

I guess I should get some of this..

I always keep amoxicillin, Keflex and Doxycycline and they are good for standard bugs... but would be nice to have something for the tough bugs.

FYI, Doxycycline becomes toxic as it ages. Unsafe to keep past expiration date. I believe all of the “cycline” type antibiotics have same caveat. Someone please correct me if I’m wrong about the other cyclones.

You can get 10% lidocaine spray. It’s sold as a “male sexual endurance aid”, but really, it’s just lidocaine spray.

Another old medication that is well worth having on hand, especially for emergency or survival situations is Zephiran Chloride (benzalkonium chloride) at the 1 to 750 dilution.

Fifty years ago, my son was born with thrush (a candida albicans infection of the mouth). The doctor prescribed an antibiotic, but the infant protested so angrily when I swabbed his mouth with it, I asked the doctor if there was something alse I could use. He then prescribed Zephiran Chloride 1 to 750 dilution. The 16 oz bottle cost around $8, less than the antibiotic. We kept it for use on cuts and scrapes for about 20 years. The baby protested much less and the infection cleared quickly. I don’t remember if I used the original dilution, or had to mix it with some water. I just know that for 20 years we had a handy bottle of antiseptic for all the little cuts and scrapes that 2 active boys sustained. I was quite impressed with the descriptive brochure that came with the bottle. YOu could use it for all kinds of things in the right dilution, some of which are explained in the above links.

Antibiotics don’t work on viruses. They never have.

“a handy bottle of antiseptic for all the little cuts and scrapes “

Bactine spray. Follow it up with over the counter antibiotic ointment and the wound should heal in about 2-3 days. (reapply ointment every day)
Works like a charm
