Tax Software [Vanity]
none ^ | 3/10/22 | me

Posted on 03/10/2022 6:20:59 AM PST by jaydubya2

I've been using Turbo Tax for years, but now their price is up to $59 for the deluxe version plus another $49 to file state. There software always seems a bit buggy, but I keep going back to it because of the convieniance of importing my personal data.

I am looking for an alternative. I don't own a business so I just need something basic.

Any suggestions?

“By the way, you do understand that tax prep costs are deductible?”

Not for most.

Agree on FreeTaxUSA.
Finished my simple return about a week ago. Free federal efile. Refund already received.

$59 + $49 is overpaying. You needed to shop around. It should cost less than half that.

TurboTax Deluxe with Federal plus one State purchased and downloaded from Costco is $49.99 at right now. This is not the online version. It would be the same price in store but that version is out-of-stock where I live.

It is always cheaper around New Years day, they raise the prices as you get near April 15.

My taxes are VERY complicated. Turbotax “Home and Business” edition manages to get me through it each year. *It includes one state. No audit so far...
I think this may be the weekend to get this done. Ugh.

You are correct. If you are filing a Schedule C for business or itemized deductions then the cost is deductible. Most people file using the standard deductions on their 1040 form. I suggest finding a good local privately owned tax business; doesn’t have to be an accountant. An Enrolled Agent can do your taxes and assist you should you have to appear for an audit. Al’round good investment. JMHO.

I have used H&R Block in all of it’s iterations since it was made by Parsons Software. It has always worked for me.

Nothing is free. If you are not the customer, then you are the product.

“I suggest finding a good local privately owned tax business; “

My mother used a service but the service failed to ask her a simple question which caused her to lose a deduction. I filed amended returns for back years.

I don't care. But if I'm the product, I worry about their quality control.

That's too much...Bro.

My returns are complicated...but I do most of the work. Cap Gains and other stuff....

I've known this lawyer for many years....but generally only charges me $100.

And I have a degree in Accounting. It’s a wife thing. It is usually an almost exact copy of last year’s return. We consolidated almost all our funds into Wells Fargo for simplicity. Then they assigned us an investment banker. Yikes!

Mr K (not the one on this forum) has an accountant and $120+/- is how much he pays (I haven’t quizzed him in a while, however; maybe the price went up). But I’m not so sure that’s a waste of money. That second signature on the return makes a lot of difference.

“TurboTax Deluxe with Federal plus one State purchased and downloaded from Costco is $49.99 at right now. This is not the online version.”

We bought the download from Costco. Five free federal filings but Fed+State version requires a $19.95 state filing fee.

I think the federal return limits and extra state filing fee are for efile, isn’t it? You can print and mail, right?

Sorry to hear that. Often it is the little things that get you.
