I don’t know what to believe anymore but the GOP should make a pledge to the American people that NO taxpayer money will go towards any kind of bioweapon, gain of function with no parsing of words, or biomedical research of any kind outside of the US.
Period. Full stop.
So does just about every nation on earth. There are good reasons to have them. Industries such as ranching, poultry and farming all need to ensure that no new bugs are coming out that could wipe out their food supply. Or spread to humans.
But that is in no way the same thing as a biological military research facilities which creates weapons'. There seems to be a "lets confuse the two narrative going here".
Technically speaking all of our biolab research is preventative. We play with bugs, including modified bugs that could be weaponized, to have cures and vaccines available in case somebody else uses them. At least that’s what we’ve been saying the last 60 years.
