Patient who received genetically modified pig heart in groundbreaking transplant surgery dies

David Bennett died on Tuesday after his condition began to deteriorate several days ago, the medical center said. He was given palliative care and was able to communicate with his family during his final hours, according to the news release.

Bennett had terminal heart disease, and had received a transplant on January 7. Bennett was deemed ineligible for a conventional heart transplant or an artificial heart pump after reviews of his medical records, and the pig heart was the only available option, the medical center said at the time.

Revivicor, a regenerative medicine company based in Virginia, had provided the heart. Three genes that are responsible for rejection of pig organs by human immune systems were removed from the donor pig, and one gene was taken out to prevent excessive pig heart tissue growth. Six human genes responsible for immune acceptance were inserted.

The medical center said the transplanted heart performed well for several weeks without any sign of rejection.

“If he was vaxxed that makes cause of death questionable IMO.”

I leave it alone when there’s no way to know. There are plenty of deaths from vaccinations we know about for sure, no need to chase the “maybes”.

By the way, we are exactly 2 years from when the virus became known to the public and shutdowns began March 13 in some areas, spreading quickly across the country. Masking didn’t hit for about a month, IIRC.

2 years and so far so good without any shots for many of us.

He lasted longer than the first human heart transplant in 1967.

“The first heart transplant recipient only lived for 18 days. Now they live for many years.
You gotta start somewhere...”

The first recorded heart transplant took place at University of Mississippi medical center in 1964.
The doctors transplanted a chimpanzee heart into a human. The heart beat for 90 minutes before failing.

The more successful human to human transplant took place in South Africa’s Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town by Dr Christiaan Barnard in 1967. The patient, Mr Louis Washkansky, a 53 year old Lithuanian living in South Africa, was the recipient and did indeed live for 18 days. The Washkansky family was grateful for the extra days of life given to their loved one.

Life expectancy for heart transplant patients is now 10 years on average.
We’ve come a long way baby!

Not from what I read at the time of the surgery.
It was stated that he was known for not taking his medicines.
Am married to a transplant patient.
Agreeing to take meds, and be followed by a physician for the rest of your life is very high on the transplant hospital’s list.
