Russian Barbarism, American Incompetence, and Ukrainian Suffering

The war did not take place in a vacuum.

Nothing will excuse the senseless and barbaric war Russia is waging in Ukraine. The war, however, did not take place in a vacuum. To pierce the context of the war is to explain it, not to justify it. Yes, there is, indeed, a distinction with a fundamental difference.

I remember being in Washington, D.C. during the collapse of the Soviet Union. Whether one was a conservative or liberal, we all suffered from the lofty hubris of the logical fallacy that the future was the present only more so. This was a classical error in the study of comparative government that Zbigniew Brzezinski roundly criticized regarding American scholars’ typical view of the Soviet Union.

Whatever the power structure of the Soviet present, it was argued that the future would reflect the present only more so. And so, it was not surprising that as the Soviet Union collapsed and calls for both democracy and capitalism echoed throughout Eastern Europe, scholars, pundits, and politicians saw the rise of two new stars in the East, democracy and capitalism.

Only once did I witness this euphoria punctuated. It was by a realistic, combat experienced, retired naval officer. To this day, I remember exactly when and where he said it because in the symphony of exhilaration it was as if someone had rolled the drums at an inopportune and dissonant time. He said, “I don’t know what the future will look like. I only know that all these predictions will be wrong because they generally are.”

He may have been drowned out by the Hallelujah Chorus on that day, but he obviously knew the chorus was praising political and economic ideologies that were distinctly American and had nothing to do with the history and culture of Russia.

Europe will regret ignoring Trump and tying themselves to Russian energy dependence too.

Is it just me or does anyone think the US has far more problems than Ukraine.

All you see is Ukraine 24/7 on TV. Yeah I feel for the Ukrainian people but this country is in dire straits and we’re getting worse on a daily basis.

You need to fix your own house before you help others.

The Biden Administration is a complete disaster and everything he’s done has been the opposite of what should have been done. It’s his exact record for the last 50 years.

“Europe will regret ignoring Trump and tying themselves to Russian energy dependence too.”

You know? I would like to believe that, but Europe (like pretty much half the United States) are so happy to get rid of “Big Bad Orangeman” that they will freeze or burn in a nuclear explosion rather than admit they were wrong.

After the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, I said the U.S. should embrace Russia as a friend, the same way it embraced Germany and Japan after WW2.

Instead, the Neocons helped the oligarchs financially rape the Russian people, while also working to expand NATO and isolate Russia.

The "brilliant" Neocon policy makers (both Democrat and Republican) treated post-Communist Russia as an enemy. So now Russia is an enemy, when it might have been another Germany or Japan.

Not for long. Gas prices are rising, as is inflation. Eventually, the discontent will be so high, the media won't be able to ignore it.

You are absolutely right, if the US would have treated Russia as we did Japan we would have a great ally, but instead we isolated them, mocked and ridiculed them, blamed them for things they didn’t do, etc etc. It is almost very similar to how the world treated Germany after WWI.

“The Biden Administration is a complete disaster”

I would disagree: It’s a magnificent success when measured against the plan for Zero’s 3rd term.

And on that basis every demoncrat is a domestic enemy.

We ARE at war; many just haven’t yet awoken to that reality.

Trump wanted better relations with Russia. The real enemies of the United States turned this positive thing into Trump working for Russia. What lies they have foisted on us. It is tragic.
