Democratic Assemblymember Jim Cooper, who represents the 9th District — which includes parts of Sacramento and San Joaquin counties — was found with a loaded pistol last week, Transportation Security Administration officials confirmed to Politico.
Cooper, a former sheriff’s deputy, told the political news outlet he was legally able to possess a firearm in an airport. His office also said that the pistol was in his bag by accident.
TSA regulations forbid the possession of a loaded firearm in checked or carry-on baggage but permit carrying a firearm and ammunition separately in checked baggage. Politico also notes that “a retired peace officer with authorization” can carry a concealed weapon, but it remains illegal to possess one on a flight, even for a former officer. The progressive criminal justice news site The Appeal reported last year that Cooper has dealt with many scandals during his 30-year career, being accused of sexual harassment and conflicts with the Elk Grove mayor and city attorney during his stint as sheriff’s deputy.
