Ok fellow Freepers. Drag out the junk box and dust of the Key and Dipole. I believe this is about to get nasty and communications in a cyberattack will be target one.

It’s not hard to get one. Even *mention* you are thinking of it and we will come out of the woodwork with advice and encouragement.

Mine AND my wife’s are current. We keep them that way.

This might make you laugh...

Back during the broadcast tv days, I would use my trusty ham grid dip meter to zero beat out my wife TV shows when they conflicted with things I wanted to watch like football. You could tune to wipe out the picture, sound or both.

There are plenty of reasons why all of these precautions might come in useful - even in the absence of WWIII.

Ham Radio is still in the box, with a license being on my short list...

When you're ready, hamstudy.org has a ton of practice tests and questions. Run through those until you're getting 90% or more. When I went for my Technician's license there wasn't a single question on the test I hadn't seen before.

Dang.... Uh, guilty as charged! :-) And I consider myself just a dilettante in the field.

Get a GMRS license and use your local repeaters.

I don’t think Russia will use nukes, but I do think they started something and will back off as a bunch of others start fighting each other. I had a dog that would start a fight and then step back.

Dang! Mine expired on Feb-22-2022.

I got it through a Ham Cram session in Livermore in 2012.

I got my ticket after they dropped the CW. Damn, I don’t want to learn that.

It's not that hard. I can almost keep up copy at 15 WPM after only a short while. Can't send for crap, though. My brain just doesn't want to work with my hand in that regard. Just keep practicing. I'm fairly new into it. Got my Tech last year, just got my General last month. Sitting for the Extra in two weeks. I don't have a lot of gear, but I wanted to get the testing out of the way so I could pursue whichever modes I wanted to.

If an “adversary” has radio direction finding equipment you probably don’t want to transmit anyway. Besides, if we’re at the point where we’re exchanging info via localized amateur and GMRS radios because everything else is down then getting tagged for an FCC violation is going to be the least of your worries.

~~~
LOL! It would be funny in a twisted sort of way if the FCC bureaucrats were still operational and could find you faster than a hostile ‘adversary’.
All good points though.
If you are unlicensed, you would still have the option to transmit in emergencies. It’s not like regulatory penalties matter at that point.
correct.
vehicles and small electronics are not nearly as susceptible as people think they are
that goofy one second after book that was written for lobbyists seems to be taken as factual when it’s based on extraordinarily improbable extremes.
Used to pick that up on my analog multiband when I lived in the UK.
One of the first things Zelensky did appears to have been to ban operation of amateur radio; I guess they can’t stop people from just listening:
I’ve heard for years they can fry circuits. Not true? I just don’t know.
