Ok fellow Freepers. Drag out the junk box and dust of the Key and Dipole. I believe this is about to get nasty and communications in a cyberattack will be target one.

Dang! Mine expired on Feb-22-2022.

Renew it now. You're within the grace period (two years after expiration - after two years you have to retake the Tech exam to be reinstated). FCC.Gov. If you don't have an account with them, you can creat one quick.

I got all three in a month in 2015. I did it exactly for the reason you cite. For me it’s a matter of investing the time. I know it’s like any language—30 min a day will get it done in short order.

But, I have Ben honing my skills and this is just another skill I need.

Exactly. Repeat a lie often enough and it is believed as the truth. EMP doesn’t fry all circuits, only those with long enough wires to capture the pulse. EMP may disrupt, briefly, an electronic circuit, but it won’t destroy it as claimed.

Once I saw a group of “red” Beofongs on Amazon. I bought four of them. I pre-set some for my kids so they can contact us and each other if need be.

Of course, if we ever need to do that…licenses will be a secondary concern.

LOL I also used go bring it to work to null out a coworker’s radio station that annoyed the heck out of me.

In an emergency, the license is not needed. Understanding the radios however, and having channels and comms set up for your family and MAG(mutual aid group) are needed and other than those who have taken an interest, will be too late for most.

That’s what I figured, besides the local repeaters, I put in the 2m Simplex Frequency 146.52 and showed my wife what to do in a emergency.

I live about 8 miles as the crow flies from my (more elderly than me) parents and have been worried about losing communication with them in a SHTF scenario. I have zero radio experience, and I would appreciate any suggestions. (I already don’t understand most of what y’all are talking about here... :-) )

Thanks,

O2

I just checked the ULS. They have a 2 year grace period to renew. I'll have to call them because I can't remember my ULS password.

I'm not sure the FCC will answer that call.

How would a neophyte get started with ham radios? I have limited income so money is a big issue right now.
