You MUST Start a Garden NOW

Now? Can't I at least wait until the last frost day?

Thinking the same thing...in a few weeks, I will do some starting. I keep a large garden normally, and I have a lot fruit trees I’ve been putting in as well.

My last frost day will probably be in May.

I’ve already started some tomatoes.

Plan and buy supplies now. Definitely wait until after last frost for tomatoes, peppers, and such. But there are quite a few cool weather crops that can probably be planted now, depending where you’re located. Check with your County Cooperative Extension Agency for a list of crops and planting dates for your area.

Frost free date for me is May 5th.

Lettuce, komatsuma(Japanese spinach), cabbage and peas. All are ok with a touch of frost.

“Now? Can’t I at least wait until the last frost day?”

North of gay frisco, the knowledgeable home gardeners and good gardeners never plant tomatoes or anything that can be hurt or killed before 15 May due to late killer frosts/freezes.

We place an order with the Tomato Lady and when she delivers before 15 May, they stay in a protected area until 15 May.

Strict water rationing will limit the water drinking plants.

Some things like peas dont care so much. My grandfather used to try to get the peas in a little earlier than most. Every year the kids would worry that the snow would wipe them out but grandpa insist that a layer of snow after planting was as good as a layer of manure and during those years where there was a final snow storm over the planting they had better yields.
