NYC's Met Opera has ousted its star soprano Anna Netrebko over her years-long support of Putin and Russian separatists, and replaced her with a Ukrainian voice, despite her issuing a statement opposing the war in Ukraine.
Netrebko, who is Russian, said that she opposes the ongoing war in Ukraine. She has been linked to Putin for years and once said she wished she could have been his 'lover' because she admired his 'strong male energy'.
In recent days, the Met has tried to convince her to publicly renounce Putin but she refused, according to unnamed sources cited by the AP.
On Thursday, Met Opera manager Peter Gelb said the company had no choice but to get rid of her while the conflict in Ukraine rages on.
'It is a great artistic loss for the Met and for opera,' Met General Manager Peter Gelb said in a statement Thursday. 'Anna is one of the greatest singers in Met history, but with Putin killing innocent victims in Ukraine, there was no way forward.'
Now, she will be replaced by Ukrainian soprano Liudmyla Monastyrska in Puccini´s 'Turandot' for five performances from April 30 to May 14, including a May 7 performance broadcast to theaters worldwide.
he Met made repeated efforts in recent days attempting to convince Netrebko to repudiate Putin but failed to persuade her, a person familiar with the developments said, speaking on condition of anonymity because that detail was not announced.
The Met´s decision followed the collapse of the international career of Russian conductor Valery Gergiev, who has been close to Putin as artistic and general director of the Mariinsky in St. Petersburg.

Not a bad Theory at all.
“Denounce Putin or you will be fired!”
Good Lord.

Punishing citizens who have done nothing wrong is not right. I’m also against what we and the world are doing to the people in Russia. I’m on Ukraine’s side, but going after citizens needs to stop
They are. And she needs to sue.
Very accurate.
She also didn’t wear a mask!

The cancel culture can come for anyone any time.
It is a virtual mine-field out there, and there is no way of knowing when you might step on one.
Nobody is safe—and nobody has your back.
She doesn’t want Polonium in her chablis
This is beyond absurd. I just wish there would be steps taken against the Russian Mafia that has been active here for too long.

She doesn’t want Polonium in her chablis
I don’t see anyone wanting to intern anyone who should simply be deported back to Russia. That’s a lot cheaper than providing them three hots and a cot.
Anna Netrebko has a long history of supporting Putin and supporting Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.
The Met does not need her to be a lightning rod for political problems when their primary job is to put on operas.
That’s petty, vindictive, and irrational.
I hope she finds grounds to sue them out of existence.
Stupid virtue signaling. Like pouring out Russian vodka you’ve already paid for.
“The Met doesn’t need her to be a lightning rod for political problems...”
They didn’t appear to be concerned about “political problems” when they put on “The Death of Klinghoffer.” In fact they were fully supported in that by the liberal media. “The Met held firm” blah blah blah.
Ridiculous. What else can people be given litmus tests over - and lose their job if they either don’t want to answer or even worse, engage in wrongthink?
