Up to now I’ve not even bothered to sound it out when just looking at it in print, probably because as you clarified, the “y” is considered a vowel—I did not realize that even though I once lived near Bala Cynwyd, PA—now your explanation makes sense.
That could be, my relatives in Schenectady have no hint of the NYC in their speech. It is unique, as different as it gets within one state.

Yeah I did have that a problem with that.
Interstate commerce where my business needed a correct house address and the natives there were not willing to give a clear, valid address for services they asked of my business.
Note also that “Mass” Ave did not show up on any map program at that time.
Also when we started the service area of Eastern Massachusetts in ‘98, I had to tell my office staff not guess that they were speaking to a male when calls from those area codes came in.
The Baaaaahstahn accent is easily THE most disgusting and annoying in the entire English speaking world.
I speak in the “Quincy Point” variant which is distinct from the South Boston original.
