Why are the teachers not completely embarrassed by this? How much of this is due to people not knowing English. Not caring about using it. Americans not caring
Because teachers can’t crack the heads open and pour information in. Students have to put forth some effort. I have been inside primary school classrooms and have seen first hand great teachers trying to teach kids to read. Unfortunately we have a vast population of people who do not value education and see schools only as their free babysitting service.

Mrs fatboy is an elementary school reading specialists. I’m not defending the education establishment, far from it but a good chunk of the problem lies with the now non-existent nuclear family. Grandma has become mommy, mommy’s boyfriend has become daddy, all three siblings have different last names, none of them the same as mommy.
No one works full time, the kids healthcare is paid for by the taxpayers, the supervising parent has a nice car and watches a lot of TV and facebooks on the phone while the kids wear clothes from Goodwill. No one goes to church or back to school night.
Teachers and teacher unions should be embarrassed. Instead they would likely argue it’s racist to define literacy.
Many teachers are indoctrinators and not teachers anymore. Look who has run education.
As long as the kiddies are taught the agenda that is all that matters.
Honestly, I think it has always been this way. Most instructional manuals and public discourse (magazines, news, journals) are pitched at about the 4th grade level.
Because stupid people vote democRAT.
That’s really the only reason that the schools fail so miserably.
At this point the system has started to cross the line into simple corruption. Teachers know that those 10 students who never turned in any homework and continuously disrupted the class do not deserve to get a passing grade but they do it anyways. Then the next teacher does the same god damned thing.
I went to crappy public schools in the 1970s (think "Welcome Back Kotter"), but my mother ensured that we were reading from an early age and not just watching TV. In fact, we rarely got to sit around and watch TV growing up. I remember Friday nights because that was the one night of the week my parents let us have control of the TV and watch whatever we wanted. The rest of the week, they controlled the dial (remotes weren't a thing then).
One thing my mother did was take us to the library every Saturday morning. We were forced to borrow four books each. We could pick what we wanted to read but it had to be four books every week. And yes, we had to sit down and read them when we got home so we learned quickly to get books that we actually wanted to read!
As a result, all of us were reading at a college level before we even got to high school.
Because the teacher's unions are very strong but aren't all that interested in teaching.
This is the result of years of NOT teaching children how to read.
English is a "phonetic" language; yet, the teachers refuse to teach children how to read using phonics. I was fortunate in that the Catholic grade school that I sent my children to, did use phonics to teach reading. Now, both of my girls were reading before they got there (hubby and I were voracious readers and passed that on to our children), but the 1st grade teacher (Mrs. Riggio) used a phonics based system and all of those children in that class went into the 2nd grade fully prepared for that level of instruction.
Teachers are not teachers anymore. They are Union members. They care about their pay checks and benefits, the children are only useful as cudgels when they go on strike for more money and benefits.
Sorry if I sound a bit pessimistic; but, I have been watching the educational system in this country collapse for a long time. I am at the point of supporting the complete collapse of the current system and the replacement with a school choice option for ALL, not just poor people, everyone gets to choose.
