Only way to make it work is have it family operated. And Pakistani.

Restaurants don’t make much money on the food; they make it on the alcohol. Unless they’re 4 or 5 star rated, and get $700 - $1,000 per plate, like the French Laundry that squatface CA gov ate at.

“eaten in a traditional Indian Restaurant. Don’t know what I ate”

A little like Chinese then

Agreed—family operated is the key.

We have an Indian restaurant in our area that has survived for years.

Notice I said “survived”, not prospered...

We like their food, but there are not a lot of folks out there who agree with us.

Low overhead is how they stayed in business.

One of my favorite restaurants is Carrabbas Italian. Half the reason for that is I can watch what’s going on in the kitchen if I want to.

Used to have a roommate that was a kitchen worker in a fairly nice steakhouse...he used to say it didn’t matter if it’s McDonald’s or Ruth’s Chris.....there’s a certain amount of nasty in every restaurant and if you knew what went on you’d never eat out again....and said it in all seriousness.

I am so glad I disabused myself of the notion of having a restaurant.

The guy who services my riding lawnmower/generator had a retail store for auto parts, etc. It got old FAST - keeping up with inventory, keeping store open certain hours, etc. So what he did was put what he needed in a van & he travels to you to service/repair. It’s wonderful - I don’t lose my mower for 3 weeks when it goes to the dealer for service ... and it’s cheaper. He can make his own schedule & if you’re a nasty customer ... well, he just doesn’t have time for you on his schedule (he’s legitimately VERY busy).

This guys loves to cook and evidently he’s good at it from some of the comments I’ve seen. He’s bought himself a food truck and already has several bookings. Since he’s used to a traveling business, he more or less knows the ropes. He gets to indulge his joy of cooking without all the hassle of a restaurant. Plus, getting down under mowers ... he’s getting old enough that it’s not as easy as it used to be.

There are two major problems that can kill any business:

Employees and customers.

If not for those two, starting and running a business would be a profitable cake walk.

Data from the BLS shows that approximately 20% of new businesses fail during the first two years of being open, 45% during the first five years, and 65% during the first 10 years. Only 25% of new businesses make it to 15 years or more.

Reminds me of my mother’s mobile home park. It had been there for 50 years. Park rent reasonable at a very good address. It had a 1950s feel, sort of run down but perfectly fine, super nice place, quiet but allowed kids although they were all well behaved and the place shut down by 7:00 p.m. with everyone was tucked into their homes. Very safe. One guy decided to set up a resident association. My mother, of course, said she wanted nothing to do with it. But apparently he got enough residents interested that the owner decided to just shut the park down. Now there are multi-million dollars homes where once there was housing for lower income. And you know what? These people don’t have a clue what they did.
